The brief
A new fence without losing the garden
This Twickenham garden is full of mature planting, with roses, shrubs and climbers growing right along the boundaries and a timber pergola in the middle. The old fence panels and posts had had their day, but the owner did not want to lose what was growing on and in front of them.
So the brief was a full new fence that looked contemporary, put up without wrecking the planting.
Before and after
The same garden, three days apart

The build
Working around the roots
The old panels and posts were taken out carefully and the waste removed from site. Where the existing metal post bases were still sound they were reused for the new posts, which kept digging among the roots to a minimum. Where there was no usable base, new posts were set in postcrete.
The new panels are double slatted: square cut horizontal boards fixed on both faces with gaps between, so wind passes through rather than pushing against the panel. Where the run needed it, extra timber supports were added to fix the panels firmly to the posts.
As each section went up, the existing climbers were gently trained back and tied onto the new panels, so they carry on growing up the fence instead of being cut back to start again.

The result
A clean boundary behind a full garden
The garden keeps its planting, and the old fence has been replaced by clean horizontal slats that make a calm backdrop for it. The climbers are already back on the new panels, and the fence is built to stand up to the wind.
