Hard landscaping for Sunbury-on-Thames gardens

Mostly twentieth century semis and detached houses on regular, level plots, with period properties along the riverside streets. Flat rectangular gardens are the norm, which keeps groundworks straightforward and predictable to price.

Level plots and easy access make this good ground for patios, driveways and artificial grass, and the drainage question is the one that gets asked first.

The build

How we build it, Sunbury-on-Thames or anywhere else

The structural work is the same wherever we build it: levels surveyed, ground dug out to depth, spoil carted away, sub-bases compacted in layers, foundations and edge restraints in concrete, and drainage taken somewhere sensible. What changes street to street is access and where the water can go.

Soft landscaping is quoted with it, so the turf, topsoil and borders go back to the new edges instead of being left for someone else.

  • Survey of levels, drainage and access on your plot
  • Excavation, muck-away and the council skip permit where a skip stands on the road
  • Compacted sub-bases and concrete-haunched edges
  • Retaining walls, steps and paths as the levels need
  • Drainage into a channel, soakaway or existing run
  • Topsoil, turf and planting to finish the scheme
  • Jet wash and full clear-up before handover

Price guide

£5,000 to £40,000 for most Sunbury-on-Thames projects

Single-element hard landscaping jobs, such as a terrace, a driveway, or a wall and steps, usually sit between £5,000 and £10,000. Whole-garden structural schemes with retaining walls, drainage and planting run from £20,000 to £40,000. Every price is fixed in writing after a site visit.

Access is the local variable. Where everything has to come through the house or over the back, the labour goes up, and we say so in the quote rather than discovering it in week one.

The full detail on materials, build-up and what a quote covers is on our hard landscaping page.

How we work on site

Off-street parking is common, so deliveries and skips usually stay off the highway, and side returns are generally wide enough for a barrow and often for a mini digger.

Waste and permits

Spelthorne Borough Council skip permits are arranged here rather than Elmbridge, for anything that needs to stand on the public highway. Some riverside addresses sit in flood zone 3, which we factor into the drainage design.

FAQs

Hard landscaping questions we get asked

What counts as hard landscaping?

Anything built rather than planted: patios and paving, driveways, steps, retaining and garden walls, paths, edging, drainage, decking and pergolas, plus the groundworks under all of it. Soft landscaping is the growing half: topsoil, turf, planting and borders.

Do you do soft landscaping as well?

Yes, and we price it in the same quote. Turf, topsoil, planted borders and mulch are part of nearly every scheme we build. We would rather finish the garden than hand over a terrace surrounded by builder's clay.

Do you subcontract the work?

No. We run three and a half employed crews and our own in-house designer. The people who survey your garden are the people who build it, which is the main reason structural details do not get lost between trades.

How long does a hard landscaping project take?

A single terrace or driveway is usually one to two weeks. A full structural scheme with retaining walls, steps, drainage and planting is typically three to five weeks. You get a programme with the quote, and one crew stays on the job from start to finish.

Do I need planning permission?

Usually not for ground-level paving, paths and normal garden walls. It becomes a question with raised terraces near a boundary, walls over about a metre next to a highway, front gardens that are not permeable, and listed or conservation-area properties. We will flag it at the site visit if your job is one of those.

How much does hard landscaping cost in Surrey?

Most of our jobs land between £5,000 and £10,000 for a single element, and £20,000 to £40,000 for a whole-garden scheme. Access, spoil volume, level changes and drainage move the figure far more than the choice of slab. We fix the price in writing after we have measured the site.
