The brief
A strip of lawn that never looked right
This terraced house in Bookham has a narrow front garden between the house and the block paved path, and the small lawn in it had gone patchy. A couple of the shrubs in the front bed were failing too.
The owner wanted the front to look smart all year without needing mowing, and while the team were there, the back patio and the front block paving cleaned up as well.
Before and after
The same garden, two days apart

The build
A base that keeps the grass flat
The old lawn was dug out, along with the cyclamen, the box plants and the failing shrub. A timber edging frame was set around the grass area to hold its shape against the paving, and a compacted sand and MOT base was levelled inside it, so the grass sits flat and drains instead of following the bumps of the old lawn.
The artificial grass was rolled out, cut in to the frame and fixed down, with joins taped and glued and kiln dried sand brushed in.
Around it, weed membrane went down and the beds were dressed in Cotswold chippings around the existing shrubs, with new planting added along the border.
To finish, the back patio and the front block paving were jetwashed, and the block paving was re-sanded.

The result
A front garden that stays tidy
The front now has an even green strip that looks the same in January as in June, with clean chipping borders and the existing planting given room to show. With the paving cleaned and re-sanded, the whole frontage looks looked after.
