The brief
A boundary that needed to do two jobs at once
The owners wanted more privacy along a side boundary that looks straight onto the neighbouring drive and houses, but they did not want a solid fence casting shade over the planted border beneath it.
The run also had to look like it belonged to a well kept garden rather than a builders panel fence, because it sits in full view of the house.
The fencing was part of a larger upgrade to the garden, so the finish had to sit comfortably next to the existing brick piers and walls.
The design stage
Drawn before it was dug
We specified Jacksons Venetian style slatted panels. The horizontal slats are set with a small gap between each one, so you get screening at eye level while light and air still pass through to the border.
Panel heights and post positions were set out against the existing brick piers so the runs line up with the brickwork instead of cutting across it, and the slat lines stay level along ground that falls away.
Jacksons timber is pressure treated with a long guarantee, which is why we use it on boundaries that are meant to last rather than be replaced in five years.

The result
Privacy without losing the light
The boundary now screens the neighbouring drive at eye level while daylight still reaches the border planting underneath. The horizontal slats give the garden a clean contemporary edge, the runs line through with the existing brick piers, and the timber is treated to last on an exposed boundary.
