The brief
A fresh look in Islington
A long, narrow walled garden behind a period house, with mature eucalyptus and a boundary of old London stock brick worth keeping on show.
The hard landscaping was in good order. What the space lacked was a centre: the middle of the garden was bare and tired, so the whole run read as unfinished.
The brief was simple. Give the garden a clean green spine that works with the paving and the brick, and keep it usable all year in a shaded city plot.
The design stage
Drawn before it was dug
We set the lawn as a single straight run down the middle of the garden, held on both sides by the raised brick beds so the edges stay crisp and the planting keeps its own space.
Because the garden is shaded by mature trees and used year round, we specified a hard wearing lawn surface that keeps its colour and drains freely, rather than turf that would struggle under the canopy.

The result
Sometimes it is the finishing touches
The new lawn pulls the whole garden together. The brick walls and raised beds now frame a clean green run from the house to the garden room, the paving reads as deliberate rather than left over, and the space is bright, usable and low upkeep in a plot that gets a lot of shade.
