The brief
Decking that had reached the end of its life
The whole of this Kingston garden was decked, and the boards had gone. Soft in places, split in others, slippery through the winter and no longer safe to walk across.
The owners wanted the deck gone for good and something they would not have to treat, sand or replace again.
The garden also sits below the house, so the level change had to be dealt with properly rather than patched.

We set the garden out as one full width porcelain terrace, running the tiles across the space so the eye reads width rather than a narrow strip.
A flight of brick faced steps handles the drop from the side gate and back of the house, with the treads in the same porcelain so the two levels read as one surface.
A gravel margin runs along the fence line to take run off away from the timber, and the manhole covers were set into recessed trays so the paving pattern carries straight over them.
The result
A garden that stays usable through the winter
A full width porcelain terrace with brick faced steps, a gravel drainage margin along the boundary and new close board fencing. It drains, it does not go slippery, and it needs a wash down rather than annual treatment. The owners have a level, safe garden they can use in every month of the year.
