The brief
Same shape, no more upkeep
The back of this Teddington house had a timber deck running across it and down the side, with steps to the lawn. The layout worked well. The boards did not: timber decking needs staining, goes slippery and eventually rots.
The owner wanted to keep the deck exactly as it was laid out, but rebuilt in composite so it would stay good with nothing more than a wash.
The build
Stripped back to the ground
The old deck was taken apart and removed completely, frame, boards and fixings. The ground underneath was cleared and levelled, and a weed membrane laid over it to stop growth coming up through the new deck.
New support posts were set in fast setting concrete and lined up and levelled, and a new sub-frame was built on them. Composite boards went down in a layout that follows the original design, fixed with hidden clips and colour matched screws so the surface reads as clean boards with no screw heads showing.
The steps were rebuilt across the full width of the deck down to the lawn, and the front face of the deck is clad in the same boards, so no frame shows from the garden.

The result
The deck they had, made to last
From the garden it is the same deck in the same place, with the same wide steps down to the lawn. The difference is that it will not need treating, and the charcoal finish sits well against the brick of the house.
