Artificial grass for Thames Ditton gardens

The village centre is period cottages and Victorian terraces on compact plots, and it gives way to 1930s semis and detached houses as you move out towards the A309. Gardens are generally long and narrow rather than wide, which is why so many of our jobs here are a terrace at the house and a second seating area at the far end.

This is our home patch. Our yard is at Manor Farm on Manor Road North, so most Thames Ditton jobs are a five minute drive rather than a scheduled trip, and we can drop back to check something the same day.

The build

How we build it, Thames Ditton or anywhere else

The base does the work: turf and topsoil out, membrane, compacted sub-base, a screeded levelling layer to a fall, then a fixed edge for the grass to be tensioned against.

Roll direction is planned before we cut anything, so joins land where you are not looking at them from the back door.

  • Turf and topsoil stripped out and carted away
  • Membrane and compacted free draining sub-base
  • Levelling layer screeded to a fall
  • Fixed edging to the full perimeter
  • Grass tensioned, joins glued and hidden
  • Sand infill and a power brush finish

Price guide

£2,500 to £7,000 for most Thames Ditton projects

Area, the grade of grass and how much digging out is needed set the price. A small rear lawn with easy access sits at the bottom; a larger area with shaped edges, steps and barrow-only access sits at the top.

Access is the local variable. Where everything has to come through the house or over the back, the labour goes up, and we say so in the quote rather than discovering it in week one.

The full detail on materials, build-up and what a quote covers is on our artificial grass page.

Working in Thames Ditton

How we get materials in

We know the village well enough to choose the right method before the first day. Older properties often need materials barrowed through, while the 1930s stock usually has a wider side return or a garage run a mini digger can use, which shortens the groundworks.

Permits and deliveries

Skip permits from Elmbridge Borough Council are arranged as part of the job. On the village streets with less kerb space we often use grab-away instead of a standing skip, so neighbours keep their parking spaces.

FAQs

Artificial grass questions we get asked

How long does artificial grass take to install?

One to three days for most gardens. The digging out and the sub-base take the time; laying the grass itself is usually half a day.

Do I need planning permission?

No, replacing a rear lawn does not need consent. In a front garden, keep the surface permeable, which ours is, and it stays within permitted development.

Which grade should I choose?

Medium pile with a mixed yarn suits most family gardens. Go short pile for small formal spaces, and pet grade if you have a dog, because the permeable backing is what stops odour.

What happens to the existing lawn?

It is stripped and carted away with the topsoil we need to remove to make room for the sub-base. Nothing is laid over an existing lawn.

How much does artificial grass cost?

Typically £2,500 to £7,000 installed, depending on area, grade and access. Every price is fixed in writing after a site visit.

Does it drain, and how do you clean it?

It drains through a permeable backing into the sub-base, faster than the clay lawn underneath it. Cleaning is a rinse and a brush; dog areas benefit from an occasional wash with a pet safe cleaner.
