Fencing and decking for Esher gardens

KT10 is a mix of period houses and later twentieth century detached stock, with noticeably larger plots on the roads off the High Street and around Esher Green. Those bigger gardens are where the full transformations happen: levels to resolve, a terrace big enough to be a room, and enough depth for real planting.

Esher is a short run from our yard in Thames Ditton and it is the town we work in most after our own. Deliveries get staged rather than dumped, which matters on roads where a lorry cannot sit for long.

The build

How we build it, Esher or anywhere else

Most of the fencing we replace has failed at the posts, often because the original was driven into clay rather than concreted. We set new posts in concrete and square the line to the paving, not to the old fence, whether the run is composite fencing or timber.

Decks get a frame at the correct centres with the right fixings, because a bouncy deck is a frame problem, never a board problem.

  • Old fence or deck removed and taken away, concrete spurs included
  • Posts set out and concreted
  • Gravel boards and correct slat or board spacing
  • Deck frames built to the right centres and levelled
  • Gates hung with adjustable hinges
  • Borders reinstated and the site cleared

Price guide

£2,000 to £8,000 for most Esher projects

Run length, height and material set the price. A standard closeboard run to one boundary sits at the bottom; slatted fencing to three boundaries or a large composite deck with steps and a balustrade sits at the top.

Access is the local variable. Where everything has to come through the house or over the back, the labour goes up, and we say so in the quote rather than discovering it in week one.

Working in Esher

What we bring on site

Fencing and decking is a hand carried job. Panels, posts and boards come in on a van or a trailer and are walked through to the garden, so a Esher property with only a side gate or a hallway route is no problem. Post holes are dug by hand or with a petrol auger, and we mix small batches of postcrete on site rather than taking delivery of bulk aggregate.

Waste and parking

There is rarely a skip on a fencing or decking job. Old panels, concrete spurs and offcuts go straight back on the van and are taken to a licensed transfer station the same day. Where Esher has residents' parking we sort a visitor or trade permit with Elmbridge Borough Council before the first day so the van is close to the gate.

FAQs

Fencing and decking questions we get asked

How long does fencing or decking take?

A single boundary run is usually two to three days. A full three sided replacement takes about a week, and a deck with steps and a balustrade three to five days once the base is ready.

Do I need planning permission for a fence or deck?

Boundary fencing up to two metres in a rear garden, and one metre where it fronts a highway, normally falls under permitted development. Decking generally does too if it is under 300mm above ground and does not cover more than half the garden. Raised decks that overlook a neighbour are the usual exception. We check before we quote.

Composite or timber decking?

Composite if you do not want to maintain it: no oiling, no splinters, stable colour, more expensive up front. Timber if you want the warmth and a lower initial cost and you are willing to clean and treat it each year.

What happens to the old fence?

It comes out, including the concrete post spurs where they are in the way, and it is taken away as part of the job. Removing old concrete bases is where the extra half day usually goes.

Who owns the boundary?

Whoever the deeds say. We will happily put the good side facing your neighbour, but we ask you to confirm ownership before we take a fence down, because that conversation is much easier before than after.

How much does it cost?

Most fencing and decking jobs land between £2,000 and £8,000. Height, run length, material and how much old concrete has to come out move the number. Fixed price after a site visit.

Is composite fencing worth the extra cost?

It costs more up front than a timber run and less over ten years, because there is nothing to treat and nothing in contact with the ground to rot. If the boundary is in full view of the house, or you have already chosen composite decking and want the two to match, composite fencing is usually the one people are happiest with. For a long back boundary you rarely look at, closeboard timber is still the sensible spend.
