The brief
Nothing transforms a garden quite like a fresh lawn
Everything else in this Esher garden was already right: dark slatted fencing, mature planting on both boundaries, a pergola and seating area at the far end.
The lawn was the weak link. Thin, patchy and uneven after years of shade and heavy use, it dragged the whole garden down.
The owners did not want the garden rebuilt. They wanted the one element that was letting it down done properly.

We kept the existing shape of the garden and simply set the lawn out as a clean sweep from the house to the pergola, with the planted borders left untouched on both sides.
Turf, not artificial, was the right call here: the borders are heavily planted and the family wanted a real lawn. The work went into the ground beneath it, which is where most lawns fail.
The result
The one change that lifted the whole garden
A level, deep green lawn running the length of the garden, edged cleanly against the borders and holding its colour under the shade from the trees. The fencing, the planting and the pergola all read better for it, and the family had the garden back in use inside a week.
