The brief

A garden with history worth keeping

The garden had grown up with the house. Mature trees, a Japanese maple, a palm and a set of old stone steps had all been there for years, and the owners wanted them kept. What had not lasted was everything built around them: soft, greying timber decking across the back of the house, a mossy patio at the top of the garden, and a lawn that thinned out to leaf litter and bare soil each winter.

So the brief was not a blank slate. It was a rebuild that respected what was already there, with a surface by the back doors the family could use in every season and clear, safe levels between the garden's two halves.

Before and after

The same garden, four weeks apart

Before: worn grey timber decking and a leaf-covered lawn behind an East Molesey house
Before.
After: premium composite decking and a new striped lawn behind the same East Molesey house
After.

The design stage

Drawn before it was dug

Our in-house designer surveyed the existing trees, steps and levels first and drew the new garden around them, rather than clearing and starting again. The planting that carried sentimental value was tagged and protected before any machine came on site.

The layout kept the garden's two natural levels: a wide composite deck off the bi-fold doors, a lawn with a stepping stone path running along one side, and an upper terrace for seating in the sunniest corner, reached by the original brick and stone steps.

The design pack

The garden, before a spade went in

Every design is drawn in-house. The client sees a scaled plan and photo-real visualisations of their own garden before we price or book the build.

The result

Timeless character, modern living

The garden still reads as the one the family knew, with the same trees, the same steps and the same shape, but every surface in it is new. The composite decking gives a refined, durable finish off the back of the house that needs a sweep rather than a sanding, and the upper terrace has become the spot the family sit in on summer evenings. A good example of what thoughtful design, careful planning and skilled landscaping get you.
