The brief
A big house asking for one clean surface
The property wraps around itself, with bay windows, a curved glazed wing and doors opening out at three different points. Anything laid here had to work from every one of those doors.
The owners wanted a single, calm surface rather than a patchwork of terraces, and they wanted the planting kept in the scheme instead of pushed to the edges.
Practically, the paving had to shed water away from the house and hold its line across a footprint of more than 300 sqm.
The design stage
Drawn before it was dug
We set the paving out from the curved glazed wing first, because that curve is the one line on the building that cannot be fudged. Everything else was worked back from it.
A bullnosed curved step was drawn where the terrace steps down to the lawn, so the edge follows the building rather than cutting across it.
Planters were built into the paving as recessed beds, keeping the mature shrubs in place and breaking up the run of stone without adding clutter.
The result
One surface, every door
The terrace now reads as a single sweep of stone from the main doors round to the glazed wing, with the curved step and the built in planters doing the shaping instead of joints and changes of material. Water goes to the channels, and the mature planting stayed exactly where it was.
